Preston Monongye (1927–1991). Born in California to a Mission Indian mother and a Mexican father, he was adopted by a Hopi family and lived at Hotvela (Hotevilla), on Third Mesa, where he was initiated into Hopi society. He started out making overlay jewelry, having learned smithing from a relative, Gene Pooyouma. After a stint in the army, attendance at the Haskell Institute, and a career in law enforcement, Monongye returned to jewelry making in the 1960s.
