In honor of St. Patricks Day, I thought I’d share the traditional Irish Claddagh with you.

claddagh The tradition of wearing a Claddagh ring has been around for quite some time and is still worn today among many Irish, and Irish American people as kind of a tribute to their heritage. It’s often still used as traditional Wedding rings.

The Design

The design is composed of several symbolic ideas. The Hands, The heart, the crown, and sometimes a cross. There are other variations without the crown, or with double hearts.
The hands represent trust and friendship, while the heart stands for love and the crown signifies loyalty/fidelity. The circular shape of the ring, stands for eternity. Sometimes the Claddagh is also accompanied by a cross, which represents faith.
How to wear it

Traditionally, there is said to be a few ways to wear a Claddagh ring. This can vary depending on how old the text is, but it’s generally like this:

 • On the right hand ring finger, with the point of the heart facing away from you: This means that your heart is open and you’re looking for love.
 • On the right hand ring finger, with the point of the heart pointed towards you: Your heart is taken, you’re currently seeing someone.
 • On the left hand ring finger, with the heart pointed away from you: You’re engaged but not yet married.
 • On the left hand ring finger, with the point of the heart toward you: You’re officially taken!

… Who says you can’t find your own meaning, though? If you like it, wear it!
